RUSSIAN POKER ACE WINS INAUGURAL WPT VIENNA
2011-03-30
Euro 447,850 payday is Gromov's best yet
The inaugural World Poker Tour Vienna wound up this week with an exciting five-hand heads up that saw Moscow poker ace Dmitry Gromov claim his biggest win yet, taking home the main prize of Euro 447 850.
Gromov pretty much dominated the competition, holding the chiplead for most of the action before facing off against a final table comprising Maxim Kolosov, Simon Ravnsbaek, Mario Adinolfi, Valentin Stroiescu, Maximilian Noll, Alessio Isaia and Mark Jenisch.
His hold over the game was illustrated by the fact that he personally took out over half the final table before ending in a heads up against fellow Russian Maxim Kolosov, whom he vanquished in only five hands.
Kolosov's consolation was a second placing purse of $241 180.
BIGBET POKER CLOSING....AGAIN
2011-01-04
Merge network site to close its doors on January 31
It looks like the second time around was no better for Bigbet Poker.com, an online poker site on the Merge network that has just announced its intention to shut up shop.
Back in February 2003 the brand belonged to a company which similarly called it a day, leaving some discontented players in its wake.
Undeterred, the [new?] owners of the brand re-launched on Merge in March 2009 but last week players started receiving calls advising them that a closure was imminent, and that as from January 3 no new players would be accepted.
This was confirmed by internet posts from an unnamed manager of the site, which advised: "As of today, Monday, January 3rd, we are no longer accepting new signups or deposits from players.
"Existing players will still be able to access their account through the client and either play out current balances or request a withdrawal.
"The final date players will be able to request a withdrawal will be Friday, January 31st, 2011."
HIGH STAKES POKER FOR POKER CHANNEL
2010-11-05
Deal with GSN will showcase High Stakes Poker
The UK based Poker Channel Europe.com this week inked an agreement with Game Show Network (GSN) which will see the former securing at least three seasons of High Stakes Poker across Europe and Russia.
The agreement will enable Poker Channel to be screened exclusively in 27 European countries and expands distribution to 30 million TV subscribers, starting Sunday 7 November with one episode flighting every week.
High Stakes Poker is considered one of the most popular poker series on TV, and features star players staking up to $1 million of their own cash in a game of no-limit texas hold’em. Pots regularly reach several hundred thousand dollars and players who lose their initial buy-in can re-buy as often as they wish.
Some of the top players in the world have featured on this show.
The deal with GSN coincides with further expansion of the Poker Channel, including new distribution to all TV subscribers of UPC Direct in Hungary, UPC Direct in Czech Republic, Focusat in Romania, and Vodafone in Portugal. The Poker Channel is now available 24/7 on over 60 major cable, satellite and IPTV platforms.
Chris White, MD, Poker Channel Europe, said "High Stakes Poker is arguably the most popular poker show of all - and deserves a permanent place in our prime time schedule in all 30 countries."
RUSSIANS AND ITALIANS DOMINATING WSOP 10K TOURNEY (Update)

Day 2 in full swing
Two Day 2 events were going full-on as InfoPowa went press, with plenty of action and heavy late night (Las Vegas time) attrition rates.
In event 13 - the $1,000 buy-in NLHE competition - an original field of 3 042 entrants had been eroded down to only 108 players by 11pm Las Vegas time, with most contestants apparently settling in for a long night and an early morning finish.
The event has generated a prize pool of $2,737,800 and a first prize of $472,479.
By level 15 the blinds were at 1 500/3 000, ante at 400 and average stack was $84 500, with the top eight chip stacks arrayed thus:
David Baker - 270,000
Daniel Carter - 240,000

Mats Gavatin - 165,000
Nathanael Seet - 160,000

Event 15 - the $10 000 buy-in Seven-Card Stud Championship - saw the original field of 170 players down to just 31 combatants by 11pm Monday night Vegas time, with Italians and Russians topping the chip counts as Vladimir Schmelev on 280 000 fought off a spirited challenge from Italian young gun Dario Minieri (250 000). Other top chip counts were:
Alex Dovzhenko 245,000
Blair Rodman 230,000
Chris George 200,000

SOUTH CAROLINA TO APPEAL POKER DECISION (Update)
2009-12-31
Attorney General refuses to accept that poker is a game of skill
The Attorney General of South Carolina, Henry McMaster, has launched an appeal against a circuit court decision overturning a conviction of five poker players earlier this year for illegal gambling.
McMaster's appeal was lodged with the state Supreme Court this week after Circuit Court Judge Markley Dennis ruled that poker was a game of skill, and therefore playing the game was not an offence.
"Our obvious reason that 'chance' need not be determined with respect to a particular game for purpose of the gambling statute is that the legislature sought to ban all 'gaming' for stakes at designated locations," the appeal filing claims, reports The Charleston Post and Courier.
Judge Dennis additionally criticised South Carolina gambling laws as "unconstitutionally vague and over-broad."
